Literature
Oxford Dictionary of National Biography: The majority of Sandys's portraits also dates from the 1860s, and includes Mrs. Susanna Rose (1862; Cleveland Museum of Art, Ohio) ... In the manner of Holbein, Sandys invariably preceded his painting with a precise drawing on paper, in which he fixed the likeness and pose, which was then transferred to the support. These drawings came to be admired in their own right and patrons were often satisfied with a drawing, avoiding the considerable expense an oil painting entailed, not to mention the many hours of wearisome sittings that Sandys required for his painstaking technique.
