Albert John Sherman was described as one of the top flower painters in Australia. He also painted landscapes but his flower paintings were much collected. He became a member of the Royal Art Society, Sydney (1928) and Fellow of the Royal Art Society of New South Wales (1936)

However, Albert Sherman was born in Truro. He lived at 45 Carclew Street and studied at the Central Technical School in Truro before learning his skills at the Truro School of Art. He was initially a coach painter, presumably with the family firm on Lemon Quay.

During the First World War Sherman joined the navy and then emigrated to Australia in the 1920s. The present work was given to a girl in Truro and was then sold by the Lander Gallery to a private collector who presented it to Truro Town Council. It now hangs in their collection.
